Can a past pleural effusion infected person donate blood in future?

Details:

I was tested positive with Pleural Effussion in 2011. I went medical treatment and recovered after 2 months. Few months back when I went to donate my blood voluntarily. I was asked to first fill form, where I ticked to "infected with Tuberculosis in past". The nursing attendant advised me that I can never donate by blood to anyone in future.

Well I didn't agree to her at that time, but I want your help and advice on this. Is she right? or is there any time period involved in it?

Please help me with your answers with supporting links.

As I understand it, your Pleural effusion could have been caused by many different conditions which can alter your blood.
Rather than trust to my speculation, have you contacted the NHS Blood & Transplantif in the UK?
If you have not their number is 0300 1232323.

Thanks for replying. I live in India and have not yet contacted NHS Blood & Transplantif in the UK, actually I have never thought for this. Anyways, can you tell me that is Pleural Effusion is also a kind of Tuberculosis?

The short answer is yes it can be caused by TB, but it is not common & many other deseases and traumas can cause it from cirrhosis to congestive heart failure, cancer to Pulmonary embolism. So its a bit like high blood pressure, it is caused by something but not a disease in it's self.

The question has to be, what did they treat you for in hospital?

I have purposely kept away from the mechanisms, but google Pleural effusion & there are many good explanations (Wikipedia's article is both accessible & well cited if you wish to go deeper).
I will repeat that this is only my unqualified opinion & your doctor is best option for a safe diagnosis (best not to mention the Internet to them! )

Thank you Ernest. I was treated with isoniazid (INH), which I beleive is commonly used for treating TB. Anyways, few doc says that previously treated TB patient can donate blood(after some years), and Red Cross nursing attendant denied this. I am still Quite confused in this.

Hi Ashish,
I have phoned the NHS Blood & Transfusion for you.Their policy for accepting donations is that you must remain clear of TB for 24 months from hospital discharge & not be subject to review or monitoring of your condition.
They advised you that different countries donation services have their own criteria to ensure overal safety with consideration to that countries conditions.
They are happy to take your call if you intended to donate here, but would be only eligible after 12months here 1st off, and talking with you directly.
Maybe the Red Cross could help if you contacted them?

I am glad and appreciate you did this for me. Yes, Yesterday I emailed them after when you advised me for NHS. They said the same thing as they said to you over the phone. I will speak to Red Cross once again regarding this.
