The law could give a crap about you losing you job, your mother or your dog. You signed a legally binding contract. The same kind of legal as the contract when you buy a home or a car. You stop paying for the home or the car they at least can take those items away from you. A contract for leasing lodging they can't take away much except your future paychecks until the money you owe them is paid and ruin your credit rating.
