I think the reason of having a birthday party is to celebrate your life. I mean you have come from a far so you should be glad about it.
Parents need to do something to give kids a chance to learn social skills, and the birthday party is one way. For older people it is an excuse for the family to gather.

A birthday party is a good way to get together with friends and family and to enjoy the day. Plus you get birthday gifts!
