Depends on the kind of boy and what he's into.
Most teenage boys (and some girls) of today are into electronic stuff and video games. So below, I'll share ideas of that.
If the boy is into video games, look into the kind of games he likes. For instance, I know my brother likes Call of Duty on Playstation 3 and he's that age. However, that's for mature players, A less 'mature' boy might also like Minecraft or Need for Speed.
If he doesn't have a gaming console, That would also be an awesome gift. Consider Playstation 3 or 4, or Xbox 360 or One. If the boy is more family oriented, WiiU is a good console for family games. Accessories for these consoles are also good ideas
If the boy is a bit techy, could get him a good Tablet like iPad or something.
If he needs a phone, get him an Android or iPhone. If he has a phone and you know what kind, could get him an Otterbox phone case (offers the best protection against falls) or Lifeproof phone case.
If he likes music, iPod's are good. If he already has a music player, Try good headphones like Dr Dre Beats. If he plays games and likes music, try Turtle Beach Headsets like the px51. (there's many many other types on their website too for each kind of gamer, and if for music too, make sure it has mobile compatibility listed)
Laptops and Laptop accessories are also good ideas. For instance, if the boy is a computer gamer, He may need a better graphics card or memory. Then, Gaming laptops are the best for anything a person might do, including school work because if a laptop can handle games, it can handle anything and lasts way longer.
If the boy is sporty or active, could buy him a good skate board, skates, or Heelys (shoes with wheels in the heel). Could also buy him good gear for whatever sport he plays, like for instance, if he plays football, he'd probably like special hand guards or gloves to help if the other players step on his hands when tackling. Boys also tend to like dirt bikes and four wheelers and cool looking helmets for them. Then there's also Remote control Airplanes, helicopters (If you go cheaply, they tend to break easily), robots, and Airsoft guns.
If you want to be classical, could buy them a cool watch or clothes (but most boys probably wouldn't rather, others unless you know their tastes)
If none of these work, can always just buy them a Vanilla gift card (don't expire) or give them money.
Just gotta kind of know the boys interests to get a good gift. Be creative! :]
