As a tax collector, do I have to save the envelopes that the checks come in?

I am a Borough Tax Collector in CT.  I do not save the envelopes that checks come in for property tax until after the due date, when the tax would be considered late.  Someone told me I have to save all envelopes

Payment is made on the date on the envelope, so that is evidence. But you only need evidence if you go to court, which you don't do for timely payments. You really should take some civics classes before somebody nails you with such a detail.
