I am planning to leave for 5 months to visit my parents. During the time I am planning to leave my belongings at some self storage unit. What are your experiences with storage units, are they safe?

Depending on the self storage, it will vary, some have security others dont, meaning alarms and armed or unarmed security, or onsite managers who live there. Most places have a/c cooled others dont. If it is only for 5mo, then i would personally recommend uhaul, for the peace of mind, of security(alarms on individual units) cctv cameras(where i am in AZ they have them), and it all being inside it is worth the 119$ a mo for 5mo. Over the long haul years worth.... I would go for something cheaper 75-90$ a mo depending on your size, most dont have alarms, but they have gated premises, and onsite security, which still helps as well.
Alsolook into the neighborhood where you are looking to rent in is the neighborhood good in general? If not I would look somewhere else that doesnt have a high crime rate over all.
I have kept mind for the past 5 years in a close by, a/c, gated, onsite security, inside for about 85$ a mo... never had a problem. ever.
I had used personal storage unit for two months when went for a vacation to India. I had no issues, my things were safe and sound when I bought them back. I used Security Self Serve Storage and they have a full time security along with cctv cameras and burglar alarms. So there were no question of burglary or theft. And since you are going for 5 months it will be better if you use temperature controlled storage units. In temperature controlled units, the temperature and humidity are controlled so that the items are not damaged.
The majority of storage units are safe, but it still pays if you do a little research about the reputation of the facility. And your things will surely be safe as long as you abide by the contract you signed and you pay your rent or whatever fees you have to pay. I had a great experience with my storage facility. I even left my car while I was away. Good luck to you :)
