Ego is Latin for "I". In psychology the word is used to signify self-awareness. In casual speech it means a lot of things, and people tend resent a person who thinks he is better than others, so all manner of individual interpretations are possible. Everybody makes up their own meaning, so everybody decides for themselves whether it is good or bad.
Well quite honestly my views are that you should plant yourself firmly in the middle. You don't want to be that self righteous, arrogant little brat (seriously. NO ONE likes those people) but you don't want to not have any respect for yourself at all and just let others push you around. You should be confident, but not without reason (for example 'I can jump off a 50 story building from the 50th floor and land on the cement sidewalk and be perfectly fine!' You can't. It's impossible. These people think of themselves as gods, and they're OVER confident.) Overinflated egos also influence how you treat other people. Everyone is of equal importance, but some people just have the idea that they are more important than others. This is completely untrue and makes both parties unhappy.
