My friend's daycare uses them for toddlers, but like all beds, they do have to be replaced due to wear and tear.
As long as the baby isn't jumping up and down on it, it should last.
As for designs, that's something you have to look up for yourself as this site doesn't allow image sharing.
I have never heard of baby cots. In USA we traditionally use a light wooden cage called a crib. In Sweden I am told that they use cardboard boxes now, which are strong enough and durable enough, but cheap and easily recycled. I have no information on what furniture is used any other place.
