I understand phobias, I have my own, for example I hate eating meat on the bone, I think it's disgusting, So I eat boneless meat instead. but my problem is different than yours.
people will not get injured in thunderstorms and you are protected when you're inside your house. Remember, all phobias can be overcome. I believe the best way is to face your fears is by confronting them but you have to want to overcome your fears first. I happen to think thunderstorms are a very beautiful force of nature, I love watching lightning. You cannot live a full life if you let a thunderstorm keep you from going outside.
Less than 50 people die from thunderstorms each year, only about 9% of everyone struck by lighting will die. The united states has a population of 300 million people. (that's not an exact number). What these statistics mean for you, is you should not let yourself be afraid of thunderstorms.
If you want a practical way to face your fears, try finding some thunderstorm videos or soundscapes on youtube and turn up the volume on your speakers. Once you feel comfortable with that, you should try getting a trusted friend or a sibling and ask them to help you confront your fear by watching a thunderstorm. But don't push yourself too, far too fast.
P.S. Some people face their fear of flying, by taking flying lessons. It may not completely go away but they will be able cope with it much better.
