Methylene blue is an inert compound that is passively cleared from the blood through the kidneys. A research subject was injected with equal amounts of methylene blue and an experimental new antibiotic and then urinary clearance rates for both compounds were measured. It was found that the clearance rate of methylene blue in the urine was less than the experimental antibiotic. Explain why.
