Go to the local shelter and pick the one you like! But remember to get one who what you like to do, like if you are active or not. ask the shelter owner to tell you about each dog.
If you are in the country where you guys can run free and swim and stuff, get a fun dog like a jack russel or a lab. if you can't do that, or take your dog places with you, you may as well get a wimpy dog like a pug.
Research breeds very thoroughly, not just for the usual grooming requirements and temperament but also for possible vet bills because of genetic issues of certain breeds. To avoid genetic issues the best either buy from a very reliable breeder or get a mutt.
Here's a good resource of dog breed info

You can also take dozens of online quizzes of 'What dog breed is best for me?' and come up with some suggestions.
