There are some things you memorize just because you keep running into them. One of them is that a mile is 5,280 feet. 5,280 divided by 3 equals 1,760 yards. A furlong is 1/8 mile, ten chains, and a chain is 66 feet. Gunter's chain was the first standardized measure for surveying.
