can people please help or give advise: we have a 9 year son who is not wiping n is smelling.. we have spoken to him taken things away n he just says we picking on him. we not we trying to help him before he gets pick on n friends say he smells..
please help or advise will be great
Ignore what he says. It's just superficial anyway. What does he do? Does he return to the bath and make repairs? That's what you want him to do. Don't you? If he doesn't, you might have to immediately stop what you're doing and do it yourself. This embarrassment will not be too bad to really hurt him but will be painful enough to push him to do the job right the first time. Keep us posted. I'd like to know what really did work the best and how my idea worked if you tried it.
A surprising amount of what we do is down to how we think others will perceive us. I know plenty of adults (including myself) who would skip a shower and not shave or slob around on days when I know I'm not going out and won't be seeing anyone. I'd feel aggrieved at being punished for this too.
I know it's not quite the same thing but your son is getting to the age where he should be taking more responsibility for himself. It might be useful for him to be told by his peers (as opposed to his parents). When I hit adolescence, it took me a little while to adjust to wearing deodorant every day. My friends soon told me about it when I didn't and I started wearing it just to fit in and be like everyone else. I don't give it a second thought now, of course, but I did need a nudge from my peers.
