First you have to Distribute the 5 on one side of the equal sign and the -7 on the others:
5u+20=-14u+14+5u
Next, combine like terms:
5u+20=-9u+14
Get variables to the same side:
14u+20=14 (subtract 5 and get 20=-14u+14)
Get the variable by itself:
14u=-6 or 6=-14u
Divide my 14 and simplify:
u=-6/14
u=-3/7
Plug it back in to check.
5(-3/7+4)=-7(2(-3/7)-2)+5(-3/7)
5(3 4/7)=-7(-6/7-2)-2 1/7
5*3 4/7=-7(-2 6/7)-2 1/7
17 6/7=20-2 1/7
17 6/7= 17 6/7
So, -3/7 works.
