We don't strictly need the queen but I think it's preferable than having a head of state that is voted for. We don't seem to be especially good at voting in our prime ministers so I don't see why we'd be any better at voting in our presidents.
Also, I think the queen is important abroad as she gives us a cultural identity and isn't as strongly disliked as a political leader often is.
The Queen is Head of State, equivalent to presidents of republics.
She was brought up from birth to serve UK and the Commonwealth. She is now in her 80's but still works hard supporting British and Commonwealth interests and charities. Other senior members of the Royal family do the same.
It only cost the taxpayer a few pence. The Royal Family are net contributors to the UK economy.
When a senior member of the Royal Family visits other countries, it is a big event and does wonders for our image. Prince Harry recently had a fantastic visit to USA. Even Prince Charles does well.
In contrast, a President is a career politician, backed by big business. I can't think of any of our current sleazy crop that I would find acceptable as our Head of State. A visit by our politicians to other countries is a non-event.
