I recently bought a surround sound speaker system. The instructions included placing the center speaker on my flat panel monitor. My son berated me for this, but would the instructions have called for this if it would mess up the monitor?

CRT or cathode ray tube monitors work on the principle that electric and magnetic fields cause the (light producing) electrons to bend in a certain direction. This is how a signal can turn into an image made with pixels, each individually guided by the signal from the source of video. The reason a speaker interferes with the picture is because speakers use magnetic fields to function. Placing a speaker near an LCD, led, or plasma display will not affect the signal. That being said, if the signal wires leading to the tv are near a speaker, they may receive interference, especially if both the wire and speaker are not "magnetically shielded." Most modern hdmi cables will function within tolerances even if there is a magnetic field present, due to their kind of "double check" wiring. In addition, most modern speakers are shielded, so most likely you will be fine.
