I have a 1990 Ford Mustang GT that I am chasing a lingering issue. When I have the MAF sensor connected the car bucks and backfires in the intake yet idles fine. When I disconnect the MAF sensor it doesn't idle as well but runs fine otherwise. I have changed the MAF and there was no improvement. What systems are bypassed with the MAF sensor disconnected?

Your MAF sensor is part of your throttle body so you're actually not getting rid of that. The intake air temp sensor in the air box which measures the temperature you can either drill and tap into your homemade tube and reinstall the sensor there or in some case, depending on the vehicle and year you can leave it out without throwing codes but your performance and mileage may actually suffer. That's what most people do is just drill, and find the right tap usually pipe thread tap and install the IAT sensor in your homemade tube and hook it back up
