We are all know, the name bootstrap means a loop kind of structure present in boot. Meanwhile, this name also come back when I'm constructing the phylogenetic trees using PHYLIP software. Why these values are called bootstrap?

I believe that the phrase "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" is where the name of the statistical method originated. This, translated, means to raise oneself by pulling on one's shoes. The phrase suggests that something is unattainable but also that it is possible to succeed on your own via perseverance and hard work. The statistical bootstrap method elicits the same reaction since it seems to generate a wide range of results from a more limited number of observed data. This is helpful for various purposes, such as determining confidence intervals. There are related methods, such as Monte Carlo and Jackknife.
