The Lunts are just fodder for his increased phoney-meter. I think he is becoming more negative throughout the book. As for Sally, I don't see any contradiction. He rejects her too. It's a bigger rejection, though, because he had previously liked her and now he's rejected even his own likes. In ways, he's rejecting himself. If you want contradiction, I guess that would be it.
