How can I safely mark knife set equipment for culinary school without expensive engraving?

Often the shoemaker/cobbler shops have an engraving machine- that is probably cheaper than a jeweller shop. Just find out how much they would charge. If you have a nice knife set that would accompany you throughout your chef career it might be worth to get your initials engraved rather then trying to mark the knives with permanent markers or try and engrave something yourself. :-)

Sorry, I meant the shops that also cut keys and sole shoes.

Ask the teacher for recommendations.

I have never tried this, but it would be an interesting experiment. Knives are made of stainless steel, or should be. Chlorine bleach turns stainless steel black. So get a rubber stamp with your name and stamp the blade with straight Clorox.
